An unconventional artist

As Guy Brett writes in his important catalogue essay on Li Yuan-chia, this artist 'simply slips past stereotypical cultural assumptions and ideological agendas'. Li Yuan-chia (1929-94), an artist from Taiwan who lived in Cumbria for more than twenty years, is, according to Brett, 'as much a representative of the modern as any Western artist, yet he makes us aware of something that is lacking in the West'.1
