Friday evening on the Purga plain the wind was bitter, the hangi pungent (a Maori feast or meal prepared in an underground oven), and the spirit of place and welcome heartfelt. Elders gathered to welcome the Pacific communities to their country. Maori offered a meal and people spoke of times past and possibilities for the future. Migration, dislocation and links to an ancestral past offered this diverse group…
