Yayoi Kusama entered the spotlight in Japan on two occasions in the 1990s. First, she represented Japan at the 1993 Venice Biennale, then she was given a major retrospective at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, an exhibition that later travelled to the Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo.
