Eating their words

A Filipino Narrative

During a lengthy discussion about exhibition labels and information, one of my museology students described the practice in Leyte (Visayan Islands) of making toddlers eat small pieces of printed newspaper texts in the belief that it will make the children smarter. Another Visayan student who grew up in Cebu supported this, I wondered about the endurance of the practice and asked if there is evidence as to its effectiveness. They both replied…
