Although Japan's stunning economic success and technological wizardry are universally acknowledged, and the post-war achievements of its writers, filmmakers, architects and designers have been widely acclaimed, its modern artists remain relatively unknown and little appreciated. This is all the more surprising in view of the importance that the Japanese attach to their traditional arts and the esteem it enjoys abroad.
