Montien Boonma's recent works have been deeply influenced by the death of his wife from cancer. In spite of the underlying anguish and turmoil, the finished pieces remain emotionally distant and evasive, restrained by peculiarly Thai rules of mourning: the greater the loss, the more stringently silent the facade.

Grief, contained by an aesthetics of sublimation, becomes channelled into expressions of spiritual entreaty and divine supplication. More prosaically, in theā€¦
