The Ninth Biennial of Contemporary Art, 1993, at the Taman Ismail Marzuki Art Centre in Jakarta illuminated developments in Indonesian contemporary art in the 1980s. The exhibition, from December 1993 to January 1994, involved thirty-nine artists from Jakarta, Bandung, Yogyakarta and Surabaya on the island of Java, and Denpasar in Bali. The participants constituted a new generation of artists, all of them being under forty years of age.
