Papua New Guinea had less than a century of direct colonial rule beginning in 1884 and ending in 1975 when the country gained independence from Australia. This relatively brief association with colonialism left many of our diverse cultures almost intact. More than half of the population of Papua New Guinea has cultures still anchored in the Stone Age, while the other half has been exposed to the Space Age.
