Zao Wou-Ki

Hong Kong

David Clarke

ZAO WOU-KI, 4.01.79, 1979.

There is a temptation when considering the art of Zao Wou-Ki (Zhao Wuji) to over-emphasise the 'Chineseness' of his art. Both western and Chinese commentators can be led to do so: the former in looking for a way to specify the source of that which is unique about his art, the latter in seeking to insert it in a narrative of national tradition. My own view, particularly after seeing the retrospective of his work held at the Hong Kong Museum of Art
