By the late 1960s traditional Thai mural painting was on the verge of dying out as an artistic practice, although it would always survive as a craft practice in provincial temples when locally prominent people wanted to 'make merit' by paying for the decoration of Buddhist temples. It was largely revived by the painter Paiboon Suwannakudt, beginning with his work at Wat Tepphol, Bangkok, in 1966. He carried this work much further in 1973…
