A Controversy of Silence

Wong Hoy Cheong in exhibition

Laura Fan

WONG HOY CHEONG, Ester, Housekeeper, 1996, 'New Migrants' series, charcoal and silkscreen on paper, 125 x 91.5 cm.

When Wong Hoy Cheong, Malaysia's most outspoken artist, theorist and critic, decided to stage a solo exhibition in Kuala Lumpur, his first in the ten years he has been back in the country, the media excitement preceding the event surpassed that of any other Malaysian exhibition held in 1996. Yet the actual exhibition was met with a resounding silence.
