American abstract art, specifically Abstract Expressionism, was successful in formulating a New York school of modern art, and in propagating the 'triumph of American painting' to the international art world. In hindsight, the triumph was in part based on a discourse of American art by critics and curators, and by institutional practices that were undeniably nationalistic and exclusionary.
