The recent popularity of Southeast Asian art in Japan has been disparaged by some as proceeding from a cultural strategy linked to economic goals and by others as a temporary phenomenon riding on the coat-tails of postmodern thought. There is probably some truth in this criticism. However, the exhibitions of Asian art organised by the Japan Foundation and the Fukuoka Art Museum since the 1980s have been notable for their painstaking research. They have
