If you look closely into the corners of Yogyakarta, you will often see senior citizens hard at work: old men pedaling becaks (rickshaws) with whatever power they have left, and elderly women hawking on the sidewalks all day. The average life expectancy in Yogyakarta, at around 65 years, is the highest compared to other regions in Indonesia. Its harmonious life is often cited as the cause.
