Building a
"Pacific Oceanscape"

An architectural history of the world's most watery region

ARCHITECTURE IN THE SOUTH PACIFIC: THE OCEAN OF ISLANDS. By Jennifer Taylor and James Conner.

Published by University of Hawaii Press, Honolulu, 2014. Hardcover with color illustrations, 356 pages.

It isn't hard to see why architects have an affinity for islands. Remote fragments of land shaped by intricate geologies, tropical islands conjure up visions of idyllic utopias, with unique landscapes that include palm trees, lush green foliage and pristine white beaches, all protected or insulated by a blue ocean horizon.
