The exterior of the stupa

Stepping inside a Tibetan temple is like entering a sumptuous gallery. Artworks of incredible beauty and craftsmanship, intricate and colorful paintings, carvings, sculptures and stunning weavings cover every available space. The ornate scroll paintings, or thankgas, with their astonishing wealth of imagery, are captivating and mystifying. 

I was lucky enough to see the creation of this religious art space in progress at the Lamusi Monastery Complex in China's Gangsu province, where the main stupa was being refurbished. The stupa is a ubiquitous feature in the Tibetan…
