JIM SPEERS, If You're Not Feeling 100%, 1998, vinyl, acrylic, fluorescents, 160 x 240 x 20 cm

'Every Day', the 1998 Biennale of Sydney, with its celebration of quotidian unsentimentality and minimalist 'this-is-this-ness' - or, according to some of its critics, a celebration of the just plain boring - seemed made for Jim Speers. His light-box sculptures, exhibited in the biennale and in 'For a Cleaner World' at Auckland's Jensen Gallery in late 1998, laconically inhabit the world of the everyday with an apparent efficacy and unpretentiousness.
