Kickin' It Up a Notch

As China tries to contain its spendthrift ways by executive fiat in a melodramatic anticorruption campaign aimed at forms of "elegant bribery," the art market-particularly at the upper end-is feeling the pinch. But markets not overly dependent on China's hot inflows and outflows are thriving. Japan's Mizuma Art Gallery, for example, is experiencing a good run, particularly at its Gillman Barracks hub in Singapore, where two recent exhibitions of Indonesian art sold out to eager Southeast Asian and Japanese buyers.
