In February 1989 the influential exhibition 'China/Avant-Garde' opened at the National Gallery in Beijing. Including works by such noted artists as Xu Bing, Huang Yong Ping and Gu Wenda, and curated by Gao Minglu, the show, which lasted only two weeks and was shut down twice during that time, defined a generation of artists, many of whom would leave Mainland China…
