'The Corruptionists', an exhibition of the work of twenty-four artists, opened on 7 November 1998 in a cavernous basement in one of the many anonymous-looking apartment buildings on Beijing's third ring-road. Although the exhibition was advertised in the city's sole English-language arts newspaper only a couple of days before it opened, hundreds of people took on the challenge of finding the building and visiting the show. For five hours a stream of Chinese and foreign viewers flowed
