Chinese artists at the Venice Biennale

With twenty-four participating artists holding either People's Republic of China (PRC) or Republic of China (ROC) passports, the 48th Venice Biennale in mid-1999 could certainly be nicknamed 'the first (and last) "Chinese" Biennale of the century'. Most reviews underlined the large number of Chinese artists as the most striking aspect of the biennale, often criticising such an extensive selection as 'excessive' or 'unneeded'. And yet theā€¦
