TOYO ITO, Blurring Architecture, 2001, installation view, dimensions variable.

In Toyo Ito's world, architecture comes close to installation. There is no disciplinary divide between art and architecture when the latter is imagined and made ephemeral and flowing as it is in Ito's work. Ito designs architectural space with light-flickering impulses, transitory effects and lingering impressions. The exhibition of his much-discussed Médiathèque building at Artspace, Auckland in 2001, can be considered a form of architecture - a speculation on and repetition of the physical building…
