BYUNGHUN MIN, Weeds, 1996, gelatin silver print.

Since the mid-1990s there has been a growing awareness of contemporary Korean cultural and artistic life in Australia, with Korean art included in the Asia-Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art, the Biennale of Sydney and 'Slowness of Speed', a 1999 exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, and the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney. However, 'Awakening', an exhibition at Sydney's Australian Centre for Photography in 2001, was the first show to feature Korea's diverse contemporary photographic practices.
